John Murray Forbes
John Murray Forbes is a well-known American businessman. He was born in Bordeaux on 23 February 1813 and died in Boston on 12 October 1898. He was a railroad magnate who became president of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and the Michigan Central Railroad in the 1850s.
Forbes was the son of a prominent and wealthy family. He immigrated to America as a child. James Grant Forbes (his father) was a highly respected Scottish diplomat and founder of the Brahmin merchant-dynasty in Boston. After a short while, the family settled in Milton. He was not a successful businessman, but his parents were. Forbes married Dorothy Murray (a daughter of a wealthy Scottish family) in Boston on 1769. Forbes became one the first American railroad investors and landowners during his time in Canton.

Francis Blackwell Forbes
Francis Blackwell Forbes was the son of John Murray Forbes, a clergyman and a member of the Forbes family. He was the great grandson of Rev. John Forbes, the grandson and great-grandson James Grant Forbes. In addition, he was a pioneer in the field of Chinese botany and was responsible for promoting the Shanghai Country Club. He also wrote papers concerning the Burlingame Expedition. Forbes and his family moved to Europe during the 1880s. Forbes later joined Russell & Co. in China. Forbes founded the Shanghai Steam Navigation Company. He also operated flat-bottom steamers on the Yangtze River.
Forbes was born on 11 August 1839 in New York City. His parents were John Murray Forbes (c1807-1885) and Anne Howell (c1849-1860). On May 8, 1867, he was married to Isabel Clark in New York City. They had three sons, William Howell Forbes (1837-1896), Henry De Courcy Forbes (1849-1920), as well as Paul Revere Forbes (1836-1936). The family owned and managed a variety of businesses in New York, as well as overseas.
